Buluttan had an interview with Umay Yılmaz that revolved around COP28, analyzing its success and notable topics, particularly focusing on critiques of the aid fund versus zero-carbon goals during the opening speeches.
Despite differing views on COP28's success, attention is drawn to the milestone inclusion of fossil fuels in the decision document for the first time, highlighting the need for gradual phasing out and alternative energy planning.
Government leaders' speeches indicate a trend of mutual monitoring and alignment among countries, with the European Union notably committed to transitioning away from fossil fuels. Turkey's substantial delegation signifies increased engagement in climate issues, with initiatives such as submitting a national contribution statement and applying for the loss and damage fund.
Various countries showcased climate and sustainability initiatives at their stands, demonstrating projects relevant to Turkey and emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in addressing climate challenges.
COP28 took place from November 30 to December 12 in Expo City Dubai. As the governing body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), COPs serve as a platform for countries to discuss and work together on crucial climate initiatives. COP28 marked a significant moment for global unity in addressing environmental issues.
Significance and Achievements of COP28
Under the leadership of Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the COP28 Presidency highlighted the United Arab Emirates' commitment to climate action.
Building upon previous COPs like the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, COP28 set ambitious targets for emissions reduction and temperature control, aiming to limit global temperature increase to 1.5°C to avoid irreversible consequences. The conference acknowledged past successes and paved the way for future collaborative efforts to combat the ongoing climate crisis.
Structure, Engagement, and Outcomes of COP28
COP28 was organized into distinct zones: the Blue Zone, managed by UNFCCC for formal negotiations and official events, and the Green Zone, overseen by the COP28 UAE Presidency, which provided a platform for public involvement.
Various thematic days, a Youth Hub, a Civil Societies Hub, and Arts and Cultural Programming enhanced the conference experience. The COP28 Presidency's Action Agenda, focusing on a just energy transition, climate finance, and inclusivity, underscored the urgent need for collective action.
As nations gathered in Dubai, COP28 facilitated collaboration, sparking discussions and commitments aimed at fostering a sustainable and resilient global future.
